Born in Colon Panama, raised in Brooklyn, New York, Mikki Afflick is an up and coming DJ and music producer who is on the rise. Afflick comes from a family of musicians, and dances to the beat of her own drum. "My dad is one of the biggest influences in my music knowledge as he would spin records like "Shakra by Femi, Hector Lavoe, Fani All Stars, James Brown , Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke to name a few. My dad had the biggest sound system I had ever seen, growing up. He and his crew Galaxy NYC, and Young Gifted & Black would take their system out the places like Riis Beach, and boat rides to Bear Mountain in upstate New York, in the summer in the 70's. I will never forget the three day house parties at my house from Friday until Sunday non- stop.
This is where Afflick experienced DJing at the early age of twelve, for one of her fathers basement parties, he had that system going so long, that it gave out, and I had to use my "little" stereo hi-fi that he brought for me the prior Christmas, I was always into electronics and playing around with my stereo, I would sneak and spin on my dad's set when he wasn't home. I was given the nick name "Lemore Rene", a local female disc jockey on NYC's WBLS in the 1970's.
But it wasn't untiI in high school that Afflick learned the true art of beat mixing from my best friend’s brother, “Love is The Message”, was the first record I can remember mixing. " I also had a love for re-editing songs I had heard on the radio. I would re-edit songs with my cassette recoder and play them for friends and family".
But it was not until studying graphic arts in college that she was bit by the Paradise Garage bug in the mid 1980s, after seeing and watching Larry Levan spin at the Paradise Garage. At the age of nineteen Larry Levan did re-edit of one of Afflick's edit and spinned it at the Paradise Garage.
Tony Smith of Network and Garbo's, was another favorite DJ of Afflick's. Who followed his foot steps at Garbo's djing , when he left the club, but she walked away from the party life to pursue becoming a graphic artist, an entrepreneur having a home decorator company, then later becoming a union electrical foreman, holding the title as foreman for the World Trade Center. After the tragic events of 9/11 attacks, Afflick knew she had to fulfill her life long dreams, and pursue music.
Afflick enrolled at The New School and studied audio engineering, and SAE for music production, then started her productions in late 2006, with her very first track Soul Sun Dance being spun at WMC 2007 by the legendary DJ Tony Humphries. This is not bad for a virally unknown producer fresh out the box. Afflick was more interested in music production rather than begin a DJ but felt that she had to DJ in order to be respected by her peeps and have her music be spun and heard only the way she would spin it.
Afflick quickly developed a reputation among her musical peers as being no joke when it comes to producing and being on the decks. She programs and makes all her beats, and plays keys all most of her tracks. She has a monthly residency in New York City entitled AfflickteD and has been on performance bills with the likes of Grammy winner Louie Vega, Anané, Abicah Soul, Boddhi Satva, Black Coffee,Joe Claussell, Lou Gorbea, John Morales ,Bradford James, Mark Mendoza ,Tyrone Francis, Dj Disciple, Duce Martinez, Jihad Muhammad,Trinidadian Deep and dance legends Melba Moore, and Barbara Tucker to name a few in only two short years for djing .
Afflick mixes Deep Soulful House, Afro-Tek, World, and Dance Classics.
